ONSIDERING
its size and population of just 10.5 million, the west
African state of Senegal has a significant presence
on the international stage.
Described
by Condoleezza Rice as the most advanced democracy in
Africa, Senegal has won plaudits abroad for its robust
advocacy of free-market principles under the guidance
of President Abdoulaye Wade. It was no accident that
George W. Bush chose Senegal as the first port of call
on his
visit to Africa last summer.
There
is a sizable expatriate Senegalese community in New
York, and when one notes Senegals geographical
position, it is not surprising that it has good connections
with both the U.S. and Europe, in addition to acting
as a gateway to the sub-region.
Although
a former French colony, under President Wade Senegal
has strengthened its U.S. ties. President Bush
and I have the same ideas, President Wade says,
the same commitment to democracy, freedom, and
the free-market economy.
